Asthma is a chronic respiratory condition affecting millions of individuals, adults and children alike throughout the United States alone. Asthma accounts for about 200,000 of the hospital admittance each year, 5% of which is fatal. Just basing on this statistic, you would already have an idea of how dangerous and sensitive asthma is. Due to the various factors surrounding the condition, treatment is varied and long, not to mention that curing the condition is out of the equation.

There is no doubt that conventional medication is very effective in terms of controlling and managing the condition but it can still take time. Not to mention that some stronger medications prescribed for more severe cases contains chemicals that might mess with your natural immunity, causing irreparable and irrecoverable damage which can also open up the way for other conditions to set in, thereby worsening your condition.

For asthma time is crucial because it is no secret that the sooner the treatment starts the sooner you will be able to expect relief. Aside from depending on your conventional medication there is also another method which have proven itself effective and safe for asthmatics; Breathing Treatments and as far as affectivity and safety is concerned, three have been able to prove themselves up to par; Buteyko, Papworth, and Pranayama.

First up, lets take a closer look at Buteyko. The Buteyko technique was established by Dr. Konstantin Buteyko in the 1960’s to help retrain the way that asthmatics breathe. The main aim of this technique is to fix erroneous breathing methods that have long been established by asthmatics; offering exercises that concentrate on nasal breathing and breath control. At the core of the method is the premise that asthmatics tend to over breathe during attacks thereby doubling the amount of carbon dioxide within the body making it ineffective for soothing the smooth muscles in the bronchial tubes thereby worsening the condition and that by controlling the breathing optimum carbonization can be achieved and thereby alleviate the symptoms with minimal medical intervention.

Secondly, Papworth; this breathing method was developed in the Papworth Hospital somewhere in England in the 1960’s. The method teaches asthmatics the importance of diaphragmatic breathing and also the self development of individual methods that will allow them to control their breathing depending on their activity. This not only reduces the chances of flare ups and attacks from happening but also gives asthmatics more handle over their condition during attacks.

Lastly, Pranayama: Pranayama is a division of yoga that is deeply concentrated on achieving wellbeing through breathing. Pranayama teaches stretches and exercises that can expand respiratory functionality and more control over the breathing mechanisms.

These so far are the three of the most effective breathing treatment for asthmatics available today. If you are interested, research a bit more first and then talk to your health provider about it. They may be able to advice or give you other options that might work better.
