Bronchitis is the inflammation of the bronchial tubes which is mostly caused by worsening cases of ordinary colds and flu that have not been given proper attention. For children it would be difficult to get diagnosed with bronchitis because it would mean time away from school and some limits to the activities that they enjoy. Bronchitis is not permanent of course and is very easily treatable. Bronchitis is further broken down into two categories namely chronic and acute.
Acute bronchitis is mostly caused by colds but in other cases exposure to cigarette smoke, smog, and strong chemical scents has also been known to cause acute bronchitis in children. While chronic bronchitis is when there is permanent inflammation present in the linings of the bronchial tubes. For both acute and chronic bronchitis the symptoms that can probably be observed are coughing which tends to worsen in the morning, wheezing, production of a deep yellow or greenish yellow mucus signifying that there is infection in the lungs, fatigue, slight fever and chills, and some feeling of discomfort in the chest.
While acute bronchitis only demands a bit of your attention and care to eliminate, chronic bronchitis is an ongoing serious illness for which you will need to constantly monitor your child until conditions finally start to improve this is because acute bronchitis can become the gateway for other, more dangerous and life threatening ailments including asthma, pneumonia and others.
What’s surprising is that even with the threat that bronchitis can probably pose to your child, the treatments are the same as with you are medicating an ordinary cold or flu. Plenty of rest to help the with your child’s natural immune system in combating the infection, plenty of water to allow mucus to move freely out of the body carrying foreign objects out, protecting your child from exposure to tobacco smoke or any kind of smoke for that matter, and keeping the air warm and moist inside your home can help in assuring quick recovery.
There are also no special medications involved since most cases of bronchitis are caused by viruses making antibiotics practically useless. Over the counter cough medicines will do, just let your child take enough to suppress any discomfort they might have when sleeping at night but do not suppress productive cough all throughout as it is essential for your child’s recovery.
Prevention measures include avoidance of exposure to smoke, good personal hygiene, temporary avoidance to people who have colds, wearing a face mask when going out and getting flu shots will help secure your child from ever acquiring bronchitis. If you want to know more about bronchitis ask your doctor about the condition and what more you can do in order to prevent or hasten recovery of your child.
