No matter the type of condition when it comes to older people, treatment is a little bit more tricky and sensitive. Due to slightly lower resistances, diagnosis can sometimes be difficult due to the other underlying factors that might be causing the condition. The same thing can be said about bronchitis for older people, since of course the symptoms associated with bronchitis are very similar to other respiratory related problems.
Bronchitis is the inflammation of the bronchial tubes due to constant irritation, viruses or bacteria bringing about symptoms like coughing, wheezing, chest pains, slight chills, fever, and fatigue. Bronchitis is further broken down into two categories mainly acute and chronic. Acute bronchitis is often caused by the advancing of a certain respiratory infection such as colds which gets better after a few days or weeks. While not considered to be dangerous acute bronchitis can be very irritating to have as it can prevent you from participating on certain activities or from going out during colder days while the condition is still present.
Chronic bronchitis on the other hand is a different story altogether as it is caused by semi-permanent to permanent inflammation of the bronchial tubes which need constant medication and attention lasting anywhere from within a few months to a few years. Chronic bronchitis is more dangerous as lack of proper treatment can leave permanent scarring on the respiratory tissues heightening the chances for other, more severe ailments like emphysema, asthma and pneumonia to set in.
Smoking or second hand smoke is the most likely culprit associated with bronchitis, although it can also be caused by inhalation of strong chemicals, toxic gases, dust or pollution, GERD or gastroesophageal reflux disease, and exposure to irritants while on the job. What’s surprising is that the treatment that you are using to eliminate your cough and cold is also the same treatment that doctors would advise to take care of bronchitis. This would include; regular intake of fluids, avoidance to smoke or smoking (easier said than done for some), sufficient rest, over the counter expectorants, multivitamins and wearing a face mask when going out.
Antibiotics are mostly not prescribed since the chances of you having bronchitis due to bacteria would only be 5-10% making them useless in most cases. It would also be ill advised to depend on antibiotics because this could cultivate antibiotic resistant bacteria worsening your case in the process. If you are diagnosed with chronic bronchitis it would be best to follow the doctor’s advice so that relief can immediately be achieved in the shortest time possible, eliminating any chance of other ailments from setting in. If you observe any of the symptoms mentioned above, it would be best to have yourself checked so that something can immediately be done.
