Getting enough exercise is important, asthmatic or non asthmatic. The reasons are very obvious as to why, but for asthmatics exercise plays a bigger role other than shaping the body or sculpting away unwanted fat. Exercise for asthmatics can mean stronger general wellbeing and the stronger immunity to resist allergens or triggers that they might encounter. The only problem is exercise can also trigger asthma and prevent you from continuing. Exercise induced asthma can manifest itself after a few minutes of the initial workout and a few minutes after you have finished.
So what then? Should you just give this idea up? Of course not! Exercise is something that you will need if you want to achieve long term relief and greater control over your condition. Here are some of the exercise induced asthma symptoms:
Coughing: Coughing can start after doing strenuous activities or fast paced activities or sports like, jogging, sprinting, playing contact sports, etc. The coughing is caused by your body’s inability to properly oxygenate your whole system. The coughing can last anywhere between 10-30 minutes. Taking your relief/rescue medication would probably take care of the problem.
Wheezing: Same as with coughing, wheezing (whistling sound made by constricted bronchial pathways) can mostly be experienced when heavy or strenuous activities are involved. Taking a short break and a puff from your inhaler would probably do the trick.
Chest tightness or shooting pain: This symptom would probably be the most dangerous one among those mentioned. Feeling as if your chest is being squeezed or feeling a sharp pain in the chest would most likely lead to a full blown attack unless immediate action is taken. Discontinue any activity and take your inhaler immediately to prevent things from getting any worse.
Unusual Fatigue during exercise: The lack of oxygen getting in and out of your system must be the likely culprit. If you feel unusual fatigue during or after your exercise you’re probably already suffering a mild asthma reaction.
These are just some of the exercise induced asthma symptoms that you might encounter. Be sure to have yourself checked if you experience these symptoms and have not yet been diagnosed. Experiencing these symptoms is not a guarantee that you have asthma; all the same, it would be best to have it taken a look at as something more dangerous might just be lying in wait.
For asthmatics, taking your asthma inhalers 10-15 minutes before undergoing exercise can help you get through your regimen without any problems. In addition to taking your medication, warming up before working out and cooling down afterwards can further prevent any symptoms that might show up. As long as you know how to handle each situation, you can look forward to a worry free exercise regimen ahead.
