Most of us love sports and a lot of us would rather participate rather than watch in the sidelines when it comes to sports. No matter the age or gender, people have the natural tendency to like some sort of activities that will enhance their physical as well as mental capabilities. For asthmatics this can be a very irritating issue to tackle since most of us know the physical limitation that asthma can impose on those it afflicts.
Sports induced asthma or more commonly known as Exercise Induced Asthma (EIA) affects about 10% of the general population of asthmatics over the world. This type of asthma only manifests itself when there is physical exertion involved, and for those individuals that love to participate in activities, getting diagnosed with EIA only means; constant monitoring, medication, as well as limitation in the number or amount of activities that they can join in.
But getting diagnosed with EIA should not mean the end of the world, with proper knowledge and precaution you will still be able to enjoy all the activities that you love without having to worry about inducing any symptoms or undergoing any attacks. Here are a few facts that you might want to take note of in order to prevent sports induced asthma from taking place:
Warming up and cooling down: Take a few minutes to do some stretching before or some light exercises first before going through a strenuous activity. This will allow your body to gradually adjust and prepare for the activity ahead the same with cooling down after an activity.
Breathe through your nose as much as possible: By breathing through your nose your respiratory system will be much better protected from the cold and dry air which could irritate your air passages and trigger EIA symptoms.
Avoid cold weathers or winter based sports: Sadly this is one sport that asthma has really set its foot down on. Studies have shown that cold air is one of the main causes of Exercise Induced Asthma.
Take medication: Taking your asthma medication before undergoing any form of physical activity can lessen the chances that you will be encountering unwanted circumstances.
Know when to avoid exercise temporarily: If you have any upper respiratory infections like colds or the flu, it would be best to move your exercise or activity to another day instead. You are more susceptible to attacks and flare ups if you exercise with an ongoing infection or ailment.
Sports induced asthma should not prevent you from doing the things that you love. By gaining greater knowledge about your condition and the settings that are most likely to trigger it, you will be able to avoid unwanted circumstances from occurring and enjoy the activity without any hitches and glitches.
